Placement Levels
Placement levels at The Dance Spot ensure that dancers are enrolled in classes appropriate for their skill set and technical ability. Because our curriculum is progressive, skills build upon previously mastered foundations. Enrolling in a level that is too advanced or too basic can limit growth and increase risk of injury.
Our structured curriculum is intentionally sequenced to prioritize proper technique, injury prevention, and steady progression. Correct placement also supports strong class flow. When dancers are placed appropriately, instructors can teach efficiently and challenge the group at the intended level. A dancer placed too low may not be exposed to the skills needed to advance, while a dancer placed too high may struggle with foundational technique.
Split Levels
In some cases, a dancer may have mastered most of the skills required for the next level but still need to refine a few key elements. In these situations, a split level may be assigned.
For example, a class labeled “Ballet L3 (L2 with approval)” is primarily a Level 3 class but allows dancers who have been designated as Level 2/3 to enroll. A “2/3” designation means the dancer may take approved Level 3 classes, provided the class listing specifically allows Level 2 dancers with approval.
When assigned a split level, dancers are typically encouraged to also enroll in a class at their primary level to ensure full mastery of remaining foundational skills before fully advancing.
Dancer Levels
Each leveled genre at The Dance Spot follows a structured syllabus with defined skills and objectives. Our numerically leveled genres include:
-
Ballet
-
Jazz
-
Tap
-
Hip Hop
-
Acro
Progression from one level to the next generally takes 2–3 years, depending on skill mastery and consistency.
Please note: Absences exceeding three per class, per semester (August–December and January–May), without makeups, may result in reassessment of placement.
Factors Considered in Placement
Level placement decisions are based on collaborative evaluations and include consideration of:
-
Age (as a general guideline, not the primary factor)
-
Maturity and classroom etiquette
-
Recognition and understanding of terminology
-
Comprehension of individual skill elements
-
Proper and consistent technical execution
-
Attendance and work ethic
Typical age guidelines are:
Level 1 – Ages 6–8
Level 2 – Ages 9–11
Level 3 – Ages 11–14
Level 4 – Ages 13–15
Level 5 – Ages 15–18
Placement assignments are determined collaboratively by our genre leads and instructors. These decisions are made with each dancer’s long-term development and best interest in mind. We ask families to trust the integrity and care behind this process.
Dancers may enroll in classes at their assigned level and any level below. Enrollment in levels above their assigned placement is not permitted.
